northern ponds for whom? part 1

This is the question that residents of Avenida Boa Esperança in the northern part of Teresina have been asking themselves since the 2000s, when the city of Teresina began to remove people from their homes for the Lagoas do Norte Project. The project has already gone through its first phase and now residents are concerned about future evictions.

“50 years is not 50 days”, “Firmino and his project took the peace of my home with the threat of expropriation”, these are one of the many phrases that the population painted on the door of their houses to send a message to the mayor and the Lagoas do Norte project.

It is very important to realize that in addition to the concern with the houses, they are also concerned with nature. With the pollution and with the trees that will be cut down because of the second phase of the project and with the animals that are at risk of disappearing from the place.

In November 2016 we spoke with Maria Lúcia Oliveira Souza who told us about the community's struggle to stay strong in the face of so much disrespect and cruelty to its history.

Check out the first part of the interview.

Due to the permanence of the Umbanda terreiros and the houses in the North Zone of Teresina, four people involved in the "Lagoas do Norte, for whom? movement" tell their experiences and impressions about the project that has been causing inconvenience to thousands of families.

INVISIBLE WATER LAYERS

Invisible Water Layers discusses and questions the origins of Teresina and its urbanization over the years. The film deals with the change in the capital of Piauí de Oeiras in 1852, the ideas of modernity at the time and the problems that resulted from this process in people and in the city.

Along with the idea of progress in the railroad, factories and steamboats, many families and workers were relocated from the central areas of the city to more distant parts. The traditional ways of life of these people coexisted, not free from conflict, with the will of civility of the local elites.

With 4 interviewees, including architects, historians and researchers, the film also brings a set of images from different places in the city, such as the Center, the Parnaíba River and Poty Velho.

CIRCULATING BETWEEN MEMORIES

Circling between Memories: recording and interview workshop. This was the second activity of the Women in the Terreiros da Esperança Project and who received us in her backyard/Terreiro was Dona Helena. Here we were jalapão, vinegar, penicillin, lemon balm and so many other plants that we found in this piece of ground as deserving as all beings of nature to remain there. Interviewing is a dive that bridges us to the other, this mirror of us, full of discoveries. This is a project carried out by Coletivo Flores.Ser de Comunicação together with the Ferreira Sousa Defense Center sponsored by CESE and SOS-Corp. In the fight against the expropriation of families, Lagoas do Norte Pra Quem?

RECONNECTING EXPERIENCES

The Women in the Terreiros da Esperança Project arrived in Mafrense. Mother Alice welcomed us, in her sacred space of prayer, to enjoy a good movie and a few fingers of prose. Recognizing yourself in the other and in the other, this was the message of the meeting that reconnected different subjects whose struggle is one, the right to the city. Residents of Av. Boa Esperança and Mafrense asked together "Lagoas do Norte Pra Quem?". Together for a collective city, against the removal of the terreiros in favor of a hygienist city project, in defense of housing.
