The region of Lagoas do Norte is the territory of the traditional communities of Teresina, who have inhabited this place since before the foundation of the capital in 1852. Before that, still in the 17th century, it was in this territory - the meeting of the Poti and Parnaíba rivers - that the accident occurred. the black and indigenous people in the struggle against colonization.
With the transfer of the capital of Piauí, the communities that lived there were excluded from the new city and their territory was demarcated as a “risk and unhealthy area”.
A century and a half later, the territory began to house a population of approximately 100,000 people.

2006 was the year in which the sanitation project arrived in a stronger and more institutionalized way on the territory of the traditional communities of Teresina.
Under the name of the Lagoas do Norte Program, the project that is justified in the urban improvement of the region, also foresees the deterritorialization of more than 2,000 families and the transformation of the place for touristic purposes.
In 2014, the riverside community of Boa Esperança was notified for eviction due to the duplication of Boa Esperança Avenue. Since then, this community has been the symbol of the resistance of the traditional peoples of Teresina.
The year 2019 was a milestone in this history, when the Boa Esperança community recognized itself as Quilombola Remnant.
Today, the struggle of the Urban Quilombo of Good Hope is for the demarcation of its territory.
